VANCOUVER, Wash. – A research partnership between Washington State University Vancouver and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office is studying regional employers that have hired persons who have been involved in the criminal justice system.
While much is known about the barriers to hiring and retaining these individuals, much less is known about what makes employment successful for all parties.
This research aims to learn from the experiences of employers who have hired justice-involved individuals and to gain a greater understanding of their motivations and benefits. The study will also examine what factors seem to be associated with success in hiring and retention of these individuals, as well as the challenges employers face.
The research project is led by Jerry Goodstein, professor of management at WSU Vancouver, who has been studying employer involvement in reintegrating justice-involved individuals into the community for five years. The project will involve in-depth interviews with about two dozen employers in Southwest Washington. Findings will be published and shared with employers and organizations engaged in efforts to provide re-entry employment services and opportunities in the region.
Employers in Southwest Washington that have hired multiple justice-involved individuals within the past three to five years are encouraged to contact Goodstein at email@example.com or 360-521-8968 before Oct. 15.
