The award for Community Partnership will be presented to June Vining, executive director of the Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) of Portland/Vancouver, Inc. WSU Vancouver Diversity Film Festival Celebrates Diversity Through Music in Film

  • Thursday, September 3, 2009 - 9:25pm

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Washington State University Vancouver's Diversity Council is launching its second Diversity Film Festival Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. in the Administration building, room 110 with "This is the Life: How the West was Won."

The theme for the 2009 Diversity Film Festival is "Living Out Loud! A celebration of diversity through music in film." The films being offered capture the passion, pride and power of people asserting their values, identity and resistance through music.

"This is the Life: How the West was Won," explores the origins of contemporary hip-hop as filmmaker Ava DuVernay takes viewers back to 1989, when a group of Los Angeles teenagers made it their mission to expand the musical boundaries of hip-hop. Every week, the teens would gather in a local health food store called "The Good Life." United by their love of hip-hop, the creative adolescents began experimenting with new rhyme patterns, melodic concepts and lyrical styles in order to keep their music fresh. In this film, viewers are invited to ponder the many obstacles to commercial success by witnessing the rise and fall of a remarkable and truly gifted family of artists.

WSU Vancouver Extends Additional Financial Aid to New and Current Students

  • Monday, August 24, 2009 - 6:47pm

VANCOUVER, Wash. - More than 160 new and current students at Washington State University Vancouver got a surprise in the mail last week. They received a letter from the university letting them know they had been granted an Access Award-$1,000 or $2,000 in additional financial aid for the 2009/2010 school year which begins today.

WSU Vancouver is awarding nearly $300,000 to needy students to provide support and access to higher education. The Washington State Legislature mandated that one percent of any tuition increase above seven percent-WSU Vancouver's tuition increase is 14 percent this year-be set aside for financial aid. The leadership at WSU Vancouver decided to match that requirement two to one.

"We have a commitment to help support our students in a variety of ways, and I believe this additional funding helps demonstrate that support in a very tangible way," said Nancy Youlden, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at WSU Vancouver.
The recipients of the Access Award are students who demonstrate significant financial need based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) but for a variety of reasons including timing and limited funds, did not...

WSU Vancouver Launches 20th Anniversary Celebration

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Washington State University Vancouver will launch its 20th anniversary celebration at commencement on Saturday, May 16 at the Amphitheater at Clark County. This year-long celebration recognizes 20 years of delivering quality education, research and service to the citizens of Southwest Washington and looks ahead to the next 20 years.

Residents of Clark County had long been concerned with the lack of availability of higher education in the region when, in the 1980s, the high-tech manufacturing industry expanded into the region. Suddenly there was a real need for highly trained computer scientists and engineers and no regional education to support it. But the real need was much broader. Local students, in any academic field, seeking a four-year degree had to either leave the area to attend one of Washington’s universities or pay out-of-state tuition at one of Oregon’s schools.

In 1989, Washington State University Vancouver was formally...
