WSU Vancouver closed last week of December, applications for spring due Monday

    VANCOUVER Wash- Washington State University Vancouver, and all Washington State University campuses, will be closed Dec. 26 – 30. Regular business hours will resume Jan. 2. During this closure students and community members will not be able to do business with WSU Vancouver in person. Regular online services will still be available at vancouver.wsu.edu.

    The WSU system will be closed the last week of December on an annual basis. The WSU Board of Regents discussed and approved the annual closure at their September 2010 meeting. Closing WSU for a period of time was a measure suggested by WSU employees in response to university officials’ request for cost-saving ideas.

    December 19 at 5 p.m. is the application deadline for new undergraduate freshman, transfer and international applications for spring 2012 admissions to WSU Vancouver. Online applications for summer and fall 2012 will be accepted during WSU Vancouver’s closure.

    WSU Vancouver’s spring semester begins Jan. 9.

WSU Vancouver invites businesses to participate in 2012 Career and Internship Fair

    VANCOUVER, WASH. – Washington State University Vancouver invites businesses to exhibit at the 2012 Career and Internship Fair Feb. 15 – 16 in the Firstenburg Student Commons on campus. There is no registration fee.

    This two-day event features general business from 3 – 5:30 p.m. Feb. 15. Non-profit, government, and science and engineering will be featured from 3 – 5:30 p.m. Feb 16. Participating businesses may attend one or both days.

    WSU Vancouver’s annual Career and Internship Fair provides a free forum for employers to speak with qualified candidates with varied experience and educational backgrounds. It provides business representatives with an opportunity to share information about their organization, collect résumé, and lets them speak directly to WSU students and alumni about internships and job opportunities. The Career and Internship Fair typically attracts more than 300 attendees.

WSU Vancouver advancing six students to national sales competitions

    VANCOUVER, Wash. – The College of Business at Washington State University Vancouver held its seventh annual professional sales competition along with a professional sales career fair Dec. 2 at WSU Vancouver. Six students will advance to sales competitions in California and Georgia.

    Twenty students competed in sales presentation role plays. Buyers and judges were sales professionals from the Portland/Vancouver area. Shaynne Goodwin and Marc Jackson were the top two performers and will represent WSU Vancouver at the National Collegiate Sales Competition (NCSC) in Kennesaw, Ga. in March 2012. WSU Vancouver students have participated in the completion for the past six years. The Cougar team from Vancouver brought home the NCSC championship in 2007. In 2011 the team reached the quarter finals. Goodwin and Jackson also won Herman Miller office chairs provided by Workplace Resource of Oregon.

    Four more top performers, Alina Ciot, Kilen Murphy, Carrie Shinn and Chad Van Dyke, will compete in the Western States Collegiate Sales Competition (WSCSC) in Chico, Calif. in April 2012. Last year was the first time WSU Vancouver competed at the WSCSC. The team took second place and...

Get tips on how to pay for college at WSU Vancouver workshop

    VANCOUVER, Wash. - Learn how to pay for college at Washington State University Vancouver’s A – Z of Financial Aid and Scholarships Workshop 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Dengerink Administration building, room 110. The event is free and open to the public. This workshop is geared toward high school students looking toward attending college, but all college-bound students are welcome.

    The A – Z of Financial Aid and Scholarships Workshop is intended to reduce confusion about paying for college, no matter where you plan go to school. The workshop will answer commonly asked questions such as: What is financial aid? What happens after I file my FAFSA? Are there any scholarships available? How do I get my money?

WSU Vancouver announces gift to new Engineering and Computer Science building

    Photo of Columbia Credit Union groupVANCOUVER, Wash – Washington State University Vancouver unveiled its new Engineering and Computer Science building Tuesday night to 200 guests at the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours event.

    During the event WSU Vancouver announced a gift to the Engineering and Computer Science building from Columbia Credit Union. The $60,000 gift is in commemoration of Columbia Credit Union’s 60th anniversary in 2012.

    “About 90 percent of WSU Vancouver students come from a 50-mile radius. They are primarily place-bound learners. As many as 15,000 WSU alumni live, work and volunteer their time in Southwest Washington and Columbia Credit Union serves more than one in four of these families. Captain James Cook Researcher to Speak at WSU Vancouver

    VANCOUVER, Wash.- David L. Nicandri, recently retired director of the Washington State Historical Society, will present “Cook in the High Latitudes of the Pacific: Antidote to the Palm Tree Paradigm” 6 – 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Multimedia Classroom building, room 6 at Washington State University Vancouver. This lecture is free and open to the public.

    Nicandri will present research on Captain James Cook’s search for Northwest Passage in the late 18th century in light of present-day understandings of climate change. If Cook, looking for a Northwest Passage, had sailed in 2011 instead of 1778, he would have passed through the Canadian archipelago into Baffin Bay, through Davis Strait and into the Atlantic. Global warming reveals the elusive Northwest Passage.

    Nicandri served for nearly 25 years as director of the Washington State Historical Society. He also served as the chief curator of the Washington State Capital Museum. Nicandri holds a master’s degree in history from the University of Idaho and has two honorary doctorates from Gonzaga University (2001) and the University of Puget Sound (2007). Community Invited to Business After Hours at WSU Vancouver Nov. 15

    VANCOUVER, WASH. – The public is invited to attend Business After Hours 5 – 7 p.m. Nov. 15 in the newly built and yet to be opened Engineering and Computer Science building at Washington State University Vancouver. The networking event is sponsored by Hoffman Construction and presented in partnership with the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and WSU Vancouver.

    Guests will have an opportunity to tour WSU Vancouver’s Engineering and Computer Science building. The $43.5 million, four-story, 56,000-square-foot building will open for classes in spring 2012. Guests may also network with business and community leaders, meet WSU Vancouver faculty and students, and enjoy catered hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

Southwest Washington MESA Hosts Math and Science Day 2011 at WSU Vancouver

    VANCOUVER, Wash. – Southwest Washington MESA (Math, Engineering and Science Achievement) will hold Math and Science Day from 9:30 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 at Washington State University Vancouver. The event is designed to promote math and science literacy among middle-school students.

    Math and Science Day partners with local businesses, academic institutions and community organizations to provide science, technology, engineering and math exhibits, demonstrations and lab activities that are innovative, interactive and engaging for middle school students. The objective of the event is to help middle-school students connect math, engineering and science to their everyday lives and help them envision themselves as future engineers and scientists.

    More than 150 students from Cascade, Gaiser, Hockinson, Jason Lee and McLoughlin middle schools are expected to attend Math and Science Day 2011. Community Members Invited to Help WSU Vancouver Identify Important Characteristics of its Next Chancellor

    VANCOUVER, WASH. – Community members are invited to share their opinions at Washington State University Vancouver’s Chancellor Search Forum 4 – 5:30 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Dengerink Administration building, room 129/130. The discussion will center on what WSU Vancouver should look for in its next chancellor and what the next chancellor should know about the WSU Vancouver community and the community at large.

    The forum will be moderated by Gay Selby, associate clinical professor, education and chair of the 17-member Chancellor Search committee. There will be an opportunity for everyone to provide feedback on paper or online for the committee’s consideration. WSU Vancouver’s Jie Xu Receives 2011 DARPA Young Faculty Award

    VANCOUVER, Wash. – Jie Xu, assistant professor in the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University Vancouver, was among 407 applicants and 39 of the nation’s brightest young scientists to receive grants totaling $11.7 million under this year’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Young Faculty Award program.  

    The objective of the DARPA Young Faculty Award program is to identify and engage rising research stars in junior faculty positions at United States academic institutions, and expose them to Department of Defense needs as well as DARPA’s program development process. Applicants for YFA grants are required to be within five years of appointment to a tenure-track position at a U.S. university. 2011 award winners will receive approximately $300,000 to develop and validate their research ideas over a period of two years.
