WSU Vancouver Invites You to Honor Women Who Inspire, Mentor and Empower

    Photo of Maya MullerVANCOUVER, Wash. – Washington State University Vancouver is closing out Women’s History month, observed each year in March, by celebrating women who inspire, mentor and empower others. The annual Women of Distinction event will be held at 6 p.m. March 29 in the Dengerink Administration building, room 110. Maya Muller, principal of Muller Design Studio, will deliver the keynote, “Hunting Rhinoceroses in the Digital Age.”

    In her role as business owner, Muller leads a team that strategically builds corporate and institutional brands through web, print and multimedia design. She is also committed to mentoring the next generation of visual communicators. As an adjunct instructor at Clark College, she has taught Adobe InDesign to beginning and advanced pupils. WSU Vancouver Students Compete in Business and Sales Competitions

    VANCOUVER, WASH. – Students from the College of Business and the Collegiate DECA chapter at Washington State University Vancouver recently competed in two business competitions. The students gained valuable experience that will enhance their future careers and brought home a couple of nice awards.

MESA Day Promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to Middle and High School Students

    VANCOUVER, Wash. - Southwest Washington Math, Engineering and Science Achievement program will host its eighth annual MESA Day from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. March 24 at Clark College. The event is free and open to the public.

MESA’s goal is to reach students who are currently underrepresented in the STEM fields—African American, Latino, Native American and girls. Southwest Washington MESA is housed at Washington State University Vancouver.

    Middle and high school students from the Vancouver, Evergreen and Hockinson school districts will have the opportunity to showcase their design, problem-solving, mathematical and communication skills on a competitive basis during MESA Day. MESA Day expects to host 120 students this year.

Hjortsberg to Read from New Biography at Brautigan Library

    VANCOUVER, Wash. – William “Gatz” Hjortsberg, author of a comprehensive biography of late novelist and poet Richard Brautigan entitled, “Jubilee Hitchhiker: The Life and Times of Richard Brautigan,” will read from his book at the Clark County Historical Museum March 17 at 1:30 p.m.

    The Clark County Historical Museum is home to the Brautigan Library, a collection of nearly 300 unpublished manuscripts from international unpublished authors. It was inspired by Brautigan’s novel “The Abortion: An Historical Romance 1966.” The Brautigan Library is a partnership between the museum and the creative media and digital culture program at Washington State University Vancouver. The library is led by John F. Barber, a CMDC faculty member and noted Brautigan scholar.

    Hjortsberg was a long-time friend of Washington-born Brautigan. When Brautigan took his own life in September of 1984 his close friends and network of artists and writers were devastated though not entirely surprised. To many, Brautigan was an enigma, erratic and unpredictable in his habits and presentation. But his career was formidable, an inspiration to young writers like Hjortsberg trying to get their start....

WSU Vancouver Offering Technology Workshops Friday and Saturday

    VANCOUVER, Wash. – The creative media and digital culture program at Washington State University Vancouver is offering 10 technology workshops from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. March 2 and 3 in the Multimedia Classroom building, room 111. Workshops are $10 per session or $80 for the entire series. They are open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. WSU Vancouver’s Spring Marquee Diversity Event to Feature ”Murderball” Star Mark Zupan

WSU Vancouver invites students and families to Noche de Familia

    VANCOUVER, Wash. – Washington State University Vancouver invites students and their families to Noche de Familia at 6 p.m. March 1 in the Firstenburg Student Commons. This free event is open to the public. Dinner will be provided.

    Noche de Familia will take place entirely in Spanish. Participants will learn about preparing for and paying for college, and common challenges they may encounter. This year the event will offer workshops for parents, middle school and high school students. Workshops for parents will feature topics such as going to college and supporting the college dream. The middle school and high school workshops will include information on getting into and succeeding at college.

    WSU Vancouver is located at 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Ave., east of the 134th Street exit from either I-5 or I-205. Free parking for this event is available in Orange 2 lot.

WSU Vancouver chancellor candidates to visit campus

    VANCOUVER, Wash – Four candidates for the position of chancellor of Washington State University Vancouver will be visiting campus in the next two weeks.

    All will meet with campus groups and will attend a community forum from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. in the Dengerink Administration building, room 110 on the day of their visit. Campus and community members are invited to attend the forums.

    Cheryl Norton, senior fellow of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, will visit Thursday, Feb. 23. She previously served as president of Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven from April 2004 to May 2010. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education and recreation from Denison (Ohio) University, a master of arts degree and master of education degree, both in applied physiology, from Teachers College at Columbia University, and a doctor of education degree in applied physiology from the same institution.
