VANCOUVER, Wash. – Washington State University Vancouver will host “Southwest Airlines in a Nutshell” as the spring installment of its MBA Stakeholder Series. Southwest Airlines Director of People, Shari Conaway, will present from 7 – 8 p.m. April 9 in the Undergraduate Classroom building, room 1. The event is free and open to the public.

Founded in 1967, Southwest Airlines is home to more than 45,000 employees and operates more than 3,000 flights per day. At the heart of this success is the company’s dedication to its employees and the corresponding benefit to its stakeholders.

“Southwest Airlines’ commitment to treating its employees with respect ripples out to the company’s interactions with other stakeholders, particularly the treatment of customers who fly with Southwest,” said Jerry Goodstein, director of the MBA program at WSU Vancouver. “Conaway will help event attendees learn about the kinds of practices an organization can develop to build tremendous loyalty and commitment among employees, which in turn inspire positive and productive relationships with other stakeholders.”

A company member for more than 18 years, Conaway understands Southwest Airlines’ team values and stakeholder culture. She will expound on the company’s dedication to business practices guided by the Golden Rule.

Conaway’s own story, of working her way through the company from the ground up, provides her with a uniquely qualified perspective to share insights into Southwest Airlines’ relationships with its employees and customers. Conaway started as a company recruiter then worked her through several different positions before rising to her current role as director of people. In this position, she is responsible for staffing, compliance, the No Limits Internship Program and the Drug and Alcohol Program. With more than 20 years of human resources experience, her focus has always been on leading, guiding and serving both external and internal customers.

WSU Vancouver's MBA Stakeholder Series brings business leaders to campus once a semester to highlight and discuss how corporations are engaging their stakeholders.

WSU Vancouver is located at 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Ave., east of the 134th Street exit from either I-5 or I-205 and is accessible via C-Tran bus service. Parking is free for event attendees.
