Advising Process

The College of Arts and Sciences has Academic Coordinators available year-round to answer questions related to our degree programs. All new transfer students who have declared an arts or science major will have an individual advising/orientation appointment with an Academic Coordinator in the department. After the initial appointment, students will have the opportunity to utilize advising in the College of Arts and Sciences biannually (every fall and spring semester).

We strongly recommend that you take advantage of the advising resources that will be available to you. Academic Coordinators will work with you to develop an academic plan and timeline based on your career and educational goals, including optional preparations for professional school after graduation. We will work with you to plan your coursework each semester.

Advising is a collaborative process. You should be prepared to take responsibility for planning your course of study with guidance and support from our Academic Coordinators.

Science students are strongly encouraged to subscribe to the Science Programs listserv. This is the way we communicate important announcements about advising, registration, workshops, internships, research opportunities, and employment. This is a monitored email list; you will not receive spam

Arts students will be assigned to a faculty mentor. We encourage you to make an appointment with your faculty mentor to discuss graduate school, career and internship opportunities or simply make a connection with a professional in your field of interest.

Human Development

Majors

Human Development degree, which includes the minors in HD, Gerontology, and Early Childhood, and the certificate in Gerontology  and Human Services Case Management and Administration.

Advising Process

Each new student to the program (whether transfer or hand-off from SRC) meets first with the Academic Coordinator for an orientation to the degree requirements. That meeting serves as the first departmental advising session. Every semester thereafter, the student will meet with an assigned faculty advisor. Those assignments and faculty advisor calendars are posted on the main bulletin board in Human Development during the two-week advising period each term. The advising hold is not removed until that meeting occurs.

Other Important Information

We have long had a website for advising on our main degree web link. It is designed to familiarize students with the degree requirements, internship experience, catalog and registration links and other useful resources for our majors.

Contact Information

The contact person is the Academic Coordinator, a position currently held by:

Student Resource Center (SRC)

Majors

The Student Resource Center (SRC) advises students in almost every major available on the Vancouver campus. However, Computer Science and Engineering students are advised in their department from their first term at WSU Vancouver. The SRC also advises all students who are undecided on their major. Many students work with the SRC for several semesters. After meeting department criteria, students complete their advising in collaboration with advisors in their major.

Advising Process

Academic Coordinators are available for appointments all year and students are welcome to meet with them at any time. Course planning appointments for each subsequent term begin as soon as the schedule of classes becomes available.

To make an appointment with an Academic Coordinator, students should stop by the SRC front desk, email src@vancouver.wsu.edu, or call (360) 546-9155.

Other Important Information

The SRC also offers additional services to assist students as they pursue their academic, professional, and personal goals.
